Michelle explains how Tom Antion’s Ultimate Guide has helped her speaking career.

Tom Antion: Tips For Larger Presentations

Control your food service. Filling the prospects full of donuts and pastries
will have them snoring within an hour (you might want them groggy if you
have a lousy deal to present Ha-ha). Also, health conscious individuals will
be turned off if you don’t provide some healthy choices like bagels, veggies,
Control your signage. When inviting large groups of prospects to your
location for a presentation, make sure they are directed exactly where to go.
Nothing will sour them more than nonexistent or confusing directions. You
may want to stage live people movers to help direct your prospects.
Control the seating. If it is a long session that will include lots of paperwork,
you may want to include tables. Just don’t make the tables too large. You
don’t want the prospects spread out too much.
Play music as the prospects arrive and at breaks. This makes the meeting
special and negates the deafening silence effect. Even if you are not in your
own venue, you can play the music on a tape player or boom box and put the
microphone in front of the tape player’s speaker. This will send the music
through the sound system of the room.
Plan for fun. In most sales presentations there is room for some degree of
levity. It is up to you to plan for appropriate humor just as you plan other
parts of your sales presentations.

Tom Antion: Get Your Audience “In Fun”

Sigmund Freud wrote:
“The most favorable condition for comic pleasure is a
generally happy disposition in which one is in the mood
for laughter. In happy toxic states almost everything
seems comic. We laugh at the expectation of laughing,
at the appearance of one who is presenting the comic
material (sometimes even before he [she] attempts to
make us laugh), and finally, we laugh at the
recollection of having laughed.”

This concept has been termed “in fun” by people that study humor.
If you want your audience to laugh, they must be in fun. You, the
speaker, must be in fun. The emcee or program coordinator must be
in fun. The whole program should be designed in fun.

Don’t do anything to take them out of in fun. Don’t discuss
controversial subjects like religion or politics and don’t make
unfriendly comments to audience members. If a problem occurs
which must be dealt with, find an in fun way of doing so. For
instance, if I’m at a presentation and someone asks me who I
voted for I say, “I voted for the USA.” That’s a cute way to say
that I really don’t want to talk about it.

Tom Antion: Asides

In the theater, an “aside” is something said to the audience that is not to be heard by the other actors. If the aside was delivered on a television sitcom, the actor would look right at the camera and talk to the viewers at home instead of talking to the other actors.

To a public speaker it means a temporary departure from the main theme or topic. If you get good at this technique, the audience will think you are a genius. The way it works is that you begin telling a story or delivering information on a certain topic. Then you go off on a tangent (aside) indirectly related to the main theme. When you have finished the aside, you pick up the main theme where you left off and keep right on going.

The audience may think you are lost or confused when you first leave the original topic, but when you return to the main line after the aside, they realize you are in total control. This is very impressive.

Great storytellers are able to take you down several auxiliary paths, but still move you along the main path from beginning to conclusion. I tell a story about some medical work I had done where the doctor said to me, “This will just pinch a little bit. ” This phrase sends me down a whole different path talking about how my dentist had said the same thing and then pushed the Novacaine needle up into my brain, twisted it around, and pulled it out. I then came back to the main line of the medical story until I got to the word gauze. This word sets off another tangential story about my mother ripping gauze off me. Then it is back to the main line again.

You can alert the audience of an upcoming aside by saying the word “incidentally” before you veer off the main path. Another good technique is to go to a different part of the stage when you do the aside. Get good at asides and you will add a new dimension to the way you tell your funny stories or deliver information.
